Kick Start Activity 3 (Advanced) – Add Some Muscle to your Blog

Well, my participation in the Edublogs-supported blogging activities is erratic to say the least…
I wasn’t sure if I should skip to the latest activity number 6 or contribute belatedly to previous activities. As you can see I’ve gone for the latter option, and I’m glad I did because it’s given me a chance to take a broom to my About Me page and to think about what other pages I could create.
Here’s what I did to my About Me page:
  • I moved my photo to the top of the page
  • I added my name and teaching role at the beginning of the page. Seems obvious to do that, but somehow I had neglected it.
  • I introduced myself at the beginning and started with a more personal, conversational tone
  • I added my passion for art and animation and linked to my newish art blog, Art does matter.
  • To encourage conversation, I asked the readers to feel free to leave a comment or introduce themselves.
  • I wasn’t sure about naming my school, so I thought I might just say that I was in Melbourne, Australia. After all, my blog is personal, and not in any way representational of my school.
  • I added a Google Map of my location
  • This year I will have the added role at school as coordinator of learning enhancement. I added this information and invited people to share their knowledge with me.
  • I added my involvement with Powerful Learning Practice since this was seminal to my connection to other people and networks

I’d like to add a page which links directly to my wiki but I haven’t figured out how to do it yet, so any help would be appreciated. It makes sense to link everything you do to your blog. In that case, should I have pages for all my other blogs or is it enough to include them in the links on the side? Comments are welcome and appreciated.

  1. Hi Tania

Great job with your About page! I really like the way you have so succinctly exressed your beliefs on teaching and learning. I found the About page a challenge to write and hope as I find my “blogging feet” that I’ll return and improve it.

I’m like you and quite behind with the tasks. I’m going to follow Premier Anna Bligh’s words to the people of Brisbane – “It’s a marathon and not a sprint”…so I’ll just keep completing the tasks at my own pace (hopefully without panicking too much!!)

    Kim 🙂

  2. Hi Tania,
I really like what you have done with your “About” page. It clearly shows your passion for learning, your philosophy of teaching and your active participation in the online environment. I also really like your images – the header drawing and your Facebook badge.
Best of luck with the rest of the Teacher’s Blogging Challenge – I will try to finish before school goes back!

  3. Thanks, Kim. Succinct? I was sure it was rambling. I’m hoping the About page will continue to evolve, as you say. Do you think we should just jump to the current task or keep going through at a slower pace? Good luck!! And all the best returning to school next week.

  4. I, too, have been erratic (at best) in my posts. I think getting a late start on the challenge makes it seem overwhelming, but I’m glad you decided not to skip any of the challenges. I am also planning on getting around to all the ones I’ve missed when I have free time (free time…what’s that?!). Thanks for sharing, and happy blogging! 🙂

    1. Thanks for dropping by, Sara. I think one of the best things about this challenge is the fact that people are leaving comments. That sort of interaction doesn’t always happen on blogs (mine at least) and makes me realise how important it is to belong to a group or network so as not to miss out on the community. Good luck with your challenges.

  5. Hi Tania

I’m going to keep working my way through the activities because there’s so much I still have to learn!

I’ve also enjoyed reading and commenting on other people’s blogs…there are some fabulous blogs out there and I’m getting to “meet” people through their blogs

    Kim 🙂

  6. Your about me looks great Tania. If you think you were a late starter, I’ve just completed #3!! Really enjoying the process too! Glad you were able to figure out how to add your Wiki as a page. A great addition to your blog.

    All the best
    Bev

    1. Thanks, Bev. I’ve had every intention of writing another post this week, but somehow the start of school in the library took me elsewhere. Is it too late now? Not sure.
